SANFORD — On the red dirt in Sanford the Sargent Farmers took on Sanford in a league double header. Sargent (13-2-0) took both games, the first by a score of 18-7 and the late game 18-3.
Sanford (6-6-0) entered their meeting with Sargent on the wrong foot. The victim of two straight losses at the hands of Center, Sanford hoped to clear the air against their league rival. Sargent has been a force this year, the Farmers have only been on the wrong side of the scoreboard twice. Those two games were against Centauri and Pagosa Springs two teams from the 3A Intermountain League.
Sanford started Saturday’s game with a five run rally highlighted by Maguire Peterson scoring two runners on a base hit. An inning later Guy Larson got home to give Sanford a 6-0 early lead.
Sargent would strike back in the third inning when Ryan Davis scored Eddie Gonzales on a single before getting a ticket to home plate himself from Hunter Younkerman. The two teams combined for three runs in the fifth inning giving Sanford a 7-4 lead heading down the home stretch. Sargent opened the floodgates in the sixth.
A single from Davis batted a runner in and two walks loaded the bases before Jacob Deacon took the plate. Deacon would triple scoring all three followed promptly by getting home himself on a wild pitch, which gave Sargent a 12-7 lead. When the dust settled on the sixth inning the Farmers had turned the tables going from trailing by three to leading by 9.
Two more runs at the top of the seventh finalized the score. Sargent didn’t spin their wheels in the late game with 11 unanswered runs in the first four innings. Sanford finally answered back in the fifth inning with Peterson leading the charge batting two runners in. But by then it was too little too late. Peterson led Sanford on the day collecting five RBI over the course of the two games. Deacon led the Farmers on Saturday with 6 RBI.
Sanford will go back to Centauri for a cross-class rematch on April 24 at 4:30. Then on April 27 they will wrap their league schedule with a double-header at home against Cripple Creek-Victor. Sargent will play their final two league games at home with two against South Park on April 28 starting at 10 a.m.
